Background

The development of mid and downstream businesses of petrochemical complexes in Taiwan has been restricted because of the long-term shortage of basic petrochemical raw materials. Thereby, in order to solve the insufficient material problem, several plants have been built in the industrial park that not only raise the output of production but also drive local economic growth; however, factories also produce refuses-bottom ashes from the incinerator. To accord with the need to dispose of large amounts of waste from petrochemical complexes, a municipal solid wastes (MSW) landfill construction project starts. The landfill mainly processes bottom ashes and the design working capacity can reach 600,000m3.

Problem / Task

The landfill construction required building a new containment system to accommodate future additional refuse and it needed to have highly stable and durable performance against UV light and weather. Due to the high sensitivity of the retaining structure of the waste landfill, it is constructed with a reinforced retaining wall structure with high seismic resistance, high toughness, and economic and environmental protection green connotation.

Solution/ Design & Construction

ACEGrid® was applied to the bilateral wrap-around reinforced embankment structure. ACEGrid® has high modulus and anti-creep performance. By using the skillful inclined plane design combined with ACEGrid®, the service life of the landfill is elevated and its high-landfill capacity is achieved. In the meantime, the reinforced structure can decrease the cost of ash transportation and derivative environmental problems. After construction, the vegetation facing the landfill improves the project site landscape.

Result

The bilateral wrap-around reinforced embankment is suitable in the level project site to form the inclined plane structure. By means of the design of the inclined plane structure, the landfill capacity and the landfill service life were advanced. In the meantime, ash disposal transportation costs and derivative environmental issues were reduced. After the construction, the vegetation facing the landfill brightened the project site landscape.
Since its completion in 2007, the amount of backfill has reached the design capacity. During the period, it has withstood the erosion of the sea breeze and the sun exposure, and it has experienced numerous storms and torrential rain. Its structural stability has been proved well.
