Application: Slope Erosion Control, Flood Detention
Hukou Township Office was scheduled to implement an improvement project for the surrounding environment of the 7th Neighborhood in Hunan Community to renovate the long-term abandoned and unmaintained land in response to the plan of rural regeneration. In 2015, the military allocated 15 hectares of land for greening and assisted in improving the drainage system and beautifying the landscape.
Problem / Task
Due to the long-term lack of a complete drainage system and heavy rainfall, it caused rainwater to overflow and eroding the surface of the land. This place was left unattended, and accumulated waste, so the environment was seriously polluted and threatened. In order to resolve the problems, Hukou Township Office introduced soil and water conservation engineering, including the ecological ditch and detention basin. The engineering not merely strengthens the drainage system to decrease the original problems but also sustains the ecosystem and landscape.
Solution/ Design & Construction
To improve the drainage capacity, avert the soil from erosion, and protect the environment, about 30,000 pieces of ACESandbag™ EC were applied in the project. After filling, constructors can install the ACESandbag™ EC in accordance with the design of the drainage ditch and detention pond wall, both of which are conducive to the space condition on the growth for going green. The Detention basin is built with the aim to work on energy dissipation for the drainage flow; the construction adopts a two-layer design and stacks sandbags beside the outer edge of the second layer. The installation method can effectively buffer the flow of water scouring from top to bottom and avoid water flow downwards to damage the bottom of the detention basin.
Using ACESandbag™ EC can not only effectively protect the surface of the ecological ditch from eroded but also retain the filler during river scour; therefore, plants grow steadily, and ecological environment restores well. Because of the excellent durability and UV resistance, ACESandbag™ EC can permanently maintain the drainage and flood detention functions. After heavy rains, the drainage ditches and detention basin still intact and solid. The overall system is in good working order, and vegetation gradually covers its surface, successfully achieving the goals of mitigating erosion and improving the ecological environment.
