An Alternative to Cope with River Bank Erosion
Erratic water flow and torrential rainfall pose dangerous risks for settlers and businesses situated near riverbanks. Accelerated river flows chip away sections of the embankment leading to the flooding and subsequent differential settlement and collapse of adjacent structures. This erosion is an ongoing natural phenomenon that alters the shape and dimensions of river systems and the negative impacts of this process in inhabited regions can be controlled and stabilized with ACEFormerTM Vegetation Type geotextile mattress.
Check out our ACE Geosynthetics project in Kaohsiung, Taiwan which uses the ACEFormerTM Vegetation Type geotextile mattress to broaden and protect previously eroded slopes of the Niaosong Canal.
ACEFormerTM Channel Broadening and Improvement Project
Project Background
The Niaosong Canal located in the Grand Metropolitan area of Kaohsiung, Taiwan was prone to flooding especially during high precipitation events. The excess discharge during heavy rainfall also eroded and inundated the banks of the canal further endangering neighboring properties. A plan was therefore conceived to broaden and improve the discharge capacity of the Niaosong Canal, so that the flooding risk is mitigated while simultaneously protecting the canal banks. The project would thereby safeguard local residents and their properties.
ACE Solution
A composite system was adopted to construct the revetment for the canal. The system consisted of a RC foundation with an ACEFormerTM cover for erosion prevention and stabilization of the canal bank. Converse to traditional channel protection engineering methods using cement mortar, the ACEFormerTM Vegetation Type geotextile mattress provides an easily accessible green space and reduced environmental impact. Additionally, a bikeway was installed which enhanced the beauty of the community’s new recreation zone.
Product: ACEFormerTM
Solution: Revetments
The Contribution
The efficiency of the drainage system significantly improved, and flooding from all ensuing typhoons and other heavy rainfall events effectively diminished. The vegetated ports of the ACEFormerTM Vegetation Type geotextile mattress continue to beautify and protect the Niaosong Canal and is praised by the local community to this day.
